Abstract:
The rapid expansion of online learning has transformed educational systems worldwide, creating new expectations for libraries and librarians. Modern librarianship is no longer limited to physical books and in-person services; it now involves digital support, information literacy instruction, and virtual engagement with learners. In this shifting environment, the role of libraries and librarians is evolving from custodians of physical collections to dynamic facilitators of digital knowledge. Librarianship is entering a new phase in which technology, virtual communication, and digital resource management shape everyday professional practice. Online learning environments depend heavily on timely, reliable, and convenient access to information. This creates an opportunity for librarians to redesign their services to meet the needs of remote learners. Modern libraries are no longer limited to physical shelves; instead, they extend into cloud-based systems, digital repositories, and virtual reference platforms. The future librarian bridges the gap between learners and information in a fully digital ecosystem. This article examines the evolving role of librarians in online learning environments, the services they provide, challenges they face, and the future direction of digital librarianship.
