Abstract:

Unmai Vilakkam ("Light of Truth/Clarification of Reality"), composed by Manavasakam Kadanthar in the 13th century CE, is one of the fourteen foundational Siddhanta Shastras of Tamil Shaiva Philosophy. Presented as a dialogue between a seeker and a spiritual preceptor, the text elucidates core metaphysical categories—the 36 tattvas, the soul (Pasu), bondage (Pasa), and the Supreme Reality (Pati). Central to its exposition is the philosophical interpretation of Lord Shiva’s Sacred Cosmic Dance (Ananda Tandava) at Chidambaram. The text reveals how the rhythmic dance physically manifests the divine Light of Truth, driving the fivefold cosmic functions (Pancha Kritya) to dispel spiritual darkness (Anava) and bestow eternal liberation (Mukti).
